Some thoughts about office noise

What’s #1 on the list of frustrations we have with our work space?  According to researchers at the University of Sydney, it is office noise.  Nearly 60% of us who work in cubicles rate noise intrusion far above visual privacy, amount of work space, and comfort when surveyed about office distractions.  When considering your office layout, keep in mind that eliminating cubicles and moving to an all-modular office concept does not solve this problem.  In fact, loss of productivity due to noise distraction doubles in open plan offices compared to private offices.  Thus, when noise is considered, office layout is a complex problem.  Planners need to be mindful of sound privacy, collaboration, productivity, and privacy among other factors.

Trend: collaborative work space

The traditional office cubicle has dominated office design for decades.  However, today office design is shifting towards “collaborative” work spaces.  The reasoning is that designing floor plans that encourage employees to interact fosters a greater exchange of ideas and more effective problem solving.

How do we design an office to maximize employee interaction?  Setup comfortable interactive areas (think lounge chairs around a coffee table).  Move managers into open work areas.  Have a “war room” for groups of 9 or so equipped with all the tools and technology needed for sharing ideas and solving problems.

We have the expertise to help your business design collaborative work space, whether in your existing office or in a new  location.  Contact us at mail.kairosfms.com or visit our website: kairosfms.com

More on your shrinking workspace

Companies large and small are looking to reduce their leased office space, but the primary reason is not what you might think.  It’s not for profitability (the average company spends only 2-3% of operating costs on office space), but for productivity and stability.  Evidence shows that more collaborative spaces and a ‘work from anywhere’ attitude leads to lower turnover and more constructive employees.  And that means a more profitable company.

At Kairos FMS we can help you re-stack your current office or move you to a new, more efficient location.  Visit our website at kairosfms.com

Is your work space shrinking?

Smaller individual workstations have been trending over the past 10 years.  The once ubiquitous 8′ x 8′ has been replaced by today’s more common 6′ x 6′.  Why? As a response to businesses’ desire to make the most of every square inch of workspace, commercial office furniture has become more efficient.  For example, shelving and filing is now able to be placed in spaces that were under used in the past.

Workstation panels, or dividers, have also been shrinking, reducing in height from 66″ a few years ago to 51 – 42″ today.  As a result, offices are more open and increased worker collaboration is happening by design.  Connecting at the office then becomes the natural evolution for a generation of younger workers raised on social networking.

At Kairos FMS, our professional interior space designers are able to balance your company’s objectives with your individual employees needs to develop an custom office space plan that ensures your office is an efficient, collaborative and productive space.  From new construction space to re-working your existing office, we have the tools to make it happen.
